Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness (1899) by Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) is a short novel about the journey of an ivory transporter in Africa called Charles Marlow, who travels along the Congo River. He meets Mr. Kurtz, an ivory procurement agent that the natives in the region worship, a mad man who has become very ill. Marlow witnesses the horror of cruelty, slavery, and racism, and the novel's theme centres around imperialism and the darkness of the innermost region of one's mind and soul.
