Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), originally published in Blackwood's Magazine from October 1899 to November 1900 as a serial, is about a young British first mate seaman hired to work on a ship transporting pilgrims. After a few days of sailing, the ship hits something and begins to take on water. The captain and his crew members quickly abandon the ship, while Jim firstly wants to put the passengers on boats, but in a last-minute decision, he leaves the passengers and the ship and jumps into the boat with the captain and the crewman. However, upon arriving at a port, they discover that the ship did not sink, and he, and his crewman, are faced with public condemnation and Jim living with guilt and shame of abandoning the ship.
